Brinjal Chops- Brinjal Gravy Recipe

Brinjal curry/ Brinjal chops is a very popular and delicious side dish that is usually served along with biryani in restaurants and most commonly at Muslim houses. Yes you got it right I got to know about this dish at my hubby’s place but this recipe is not from my MIL but is from one of my husbands relative who actually is also expert in making this curry. I actually pictured this recipe long back but completely forgot about it until I made it again this week. This little spicy and tangy brinjal curry has a very easy and interesting preparation which makes its outcome look wonderful and tasty. This curry requires grinding of few ingredients which actually is the key to its deliciousness but otherwise it does not demand any unusual ingredients in its making. Any veggie lover will adore this curry for its taste as it goes well with chapati, roti and plain rice too. So if you are making biryani this Sunday don’t forget to try this recipe because this curry adds to the taste to any biryani. So lets get to the making of brinjal curry!

Ingredients

  • Brinjal- 6 to 8
  • Onion – 1
  • Tomato – 1 (big sized)
  • Ginger garlic paste
  • Tamarind – small gooseberry size
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
  • Garam masala powder – ½ tsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
  • Cumin seeds – ¼ tsp
  • Oil – 1 ½ tbsp
  • INGREDIENTS TO ROAST AND GRIND
  • Peanuts- 1 tbsp
  • Sesame seeds – 1 tbsp
  • Dried red chilli- 10
  • Coriander seeds – 2 tsp
  • Cumin – seeds – ½ tsp

Step by Steps

1) Soak tamarind in ½ cup warm water. Extract tamarind juice and keep it aside. Slice onions thin, chop tomatoes and slice each brinjal into 4 pieces and keep it aside. (Keep brinjal in water after slicing in order to prevent discoloration).

2) In a pan/ kadai dry roast peanuts, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, sesame seeds and dried red chilli in medium flame until aromatic. When they look roasted transfer it to a blender and grind it powder and keep it aside

3) Heat oil in a kadai add mustard seeds, when it splutters add cumin seeds when it crackles add sliced onion and saute well. When the onions look sauteed add ginger garlic paste and saute well. When the raw smell of ginger garlic paste goes add chopped tomatoes, salt, turmeric powder and garam masala powder. Saute well and allow the tomatoes to get cooked in medium flame

4) When tomatoes look soft and mushy add the brinjal slices. Saute well for few minutes till the brinjal gets roasted. When brinjal looks a little roasted add tamarind extract and mix well. Allow the mixture to boil well and also cook the brinjal in medium flame. (This should take about 5 minutes).

5) When the brinjal looks cooked add the ground masala powder and mix well. Cook the mixture for 2 minutes and the gravy/curry will look thick with oil separating in the sides, that’s when put off the flame and serve it hot with biryani!

TIPs

If you want the gravy sweeter, add more jaggery.

You may use small purple brinjals, but I have used the big one.

If you want the gravy to be thick/ thin you can increase or decrease the amount of water.

Keep tasting and if u want it more tangy add more tamarind paste.
